[News] Solar stocks crushed as Senate budget bill proposal keeps cuts to solar incentives
Solar company shares plunged post-market Monday after a U.S. Senate panel proposed a full phase-out of solar and wind energy tax credits by 2028.
However, the modified text of the bill extends tax credits for hydro, nuclear and geothermal power to 2036.
First Solar (FSLR), which analysts have said would come out of the tax law changes better than its peers, was down more than 7% after-hours.
The Senate language gives more time for clean energy projects to use the tax credits than the House version, which required that a project must start construction within 60 days of the bill’s enactment and be placed in service by year-end 2028 to qualify for the tax credits.
The Senate language changes it so that facilities need to begin construction in a certain year to claim the credit rather than be placed in service.
Like the House bill, the Senate bill eliminates consumer-facing credits for installing rooftop panels and making other energy-related home improvements.

[News] Centrus Energy wins DoE contract extension to continue HALEU production
Centrus Energy (NYSE:LEU) +3.7% pre-market Friday after saying the U.S. Department of Energy exercised an option to extend its contract for producing high-assay, low-enriched uranium through June 30, 2026; the DoE has additional options for continued production as many as eight additional years.
The one-year extension, valued at ~$110M, continues the partnership the DoE launched with Centrus (NYSE:LEU) in 2019 to restore U.S. ability to enrich uranium and provide a source of HALEU.
Centrus (LEU) completed Phase 1 of a three-phase contract in late 2023 by launching enrichment operations and delivering 20 kg of HALEU, and Phase 2, which concludes June 30, 2025, the company is producing an additional 900 kg of HALEU for the DoE's use.
The DoE amended the contract this month, splitting the first three-year extension period into a one-year option followed by a two-year option; the department has exercised the first of these options, kicking off Phase 3I with additional HALEU production through June 30, 2026.

[News] Apple has internally discussed acquiring Perplexity AI - Bloomberg
Hours after Bloomberg reported that Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) held talks with Perplexity AI, the news service is now reporting that Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) also had internal discussions about acquiring the artificial intelligence search startup.
Apple's head of M&A Adrian Perica has discussed the idea with SVP, Services Eddy Cue, along with other AI officials at the company, people familiar with the matter told Bloomberg.
The talks within Apple are still at an early stage and may not result in a formal bid.
If Apple does acquire Perplexity AI, it would help the former develop an AI-based search engine. Apple currently has a deal with Google (GOOG)(GOOGL) to have the latter as the default search engine in its products, though that partnership is at risk from antitrust authorities.

Conflicting Reports Emerge on Iran’s Push for De-escalation With Israel
The Wall Street Journal reported that Iran has reportedly been sending signals to Israel and the U.S. through Arab intermediaries as it looks to de-escalate the conflict and resume talks over the nuclear deals.
Tehran has also reportedly said they would be willing to come back to the table as long as the U.S. does not enter into the attack, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing Middle Eastern and European officials.
However, a senior Iranian official and a "well-informed" regional diplomat rejected the claim that Iran has sent indications to cease the hostilities, Al Jazeera journalist Ali Hashem said on social media platform X.
Iran has however said it is ready to return to the negotiating table if Israel pauses its attacks.
“In the future, if the aggression stops, it is obvious that the ground will be prepared for a return to diplomacy,” Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told foreign diplomats Sunday in Tehran.

Coinbase reportedly seeking to offer stock trading via blockchain
Coinbase Global (NASDAQ:COIN) is seeking permission to offer "tokenized equities" to its customers, according to a media report on Tuesday. If approved, the move would allow its customers to trade stocks on the blockchain, effectively bringing the crypto exchange into direct competition with online brokers, such as Robinhood Markets (HOOD) and Charles Schwab (SCHW).
Coinbase Chief Legal Officer Paul Grewal called the initiative a "huge priority," Reuters reported on Tuesday. Similar to crypto trading, investors would hold tokens that represent ownership in the securities, instead of directly owning the securities.
Proponents of the concept say it would lower trading costs and enable faster settlement and round-the-clock trading.
Last month, the Wall Street Journal reported that crypto exchange Kraken is planning to offer tokenized versions of Apple (AAPL), Tesla (TSLA), Nvidia (NVDA), and other high-profile stocks for non-U.S. customers.
In April, Kraken said it's launching commission-free stock trading in nine states and the District of Columbia, with plans to roll out to all of the U.S. and eventually to the U.K., Europe, and Australia.

[Newsletter Exclusive] LNG emissions could be cut by 60% with existing tech, $100 billion investment needed - IEA
Greenhouse gas emissions associated with global LNG supply are roughly 350 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent annually.
Around 70% of this is in the form of CO2 emissions that are either combusted or vented; the remaining 30% is methane that escapes unburnt into the atmosphere, the International Energy Agency (IEA) said.
According to the report, when all direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions are factored in, more than 99% of the LNG consumed in 2024 had lower lifecycle emissions than coal.
Globally, on average, LNG results in about 25% less emissions than coal.
Nevertheless, the report emphasizes that for those making an environmental case for LNG use, comparing it only to coal – the most carbon-intensive fuel – sets the bar too low, "especially given the strong opportunities at hand for improving the emissions performance of LNG supply".
Other cost-effective strategies that could substantially reduce emissions include increasing process efficiency across the supply chain and implementing carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) at liquefaction facilities to capture the naturally occurring CO2 present in the feed gas.

Tesla opening showrooms in India next month
Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) is finally entering the Indian market, opening a showroom in Mumbai and New Delhi, selling Chinese-made Model Y SUVs in the world’s most populated country.
The Mumbai showroom is scheduled to open in mid-July, followed later in the month with a showroom in New Delhi, Bloomberg reported on Friday.
India assesses a 70% tax on fully-built imported vehicles under $40K
According to documents viewed by Bloomberg, five Model Y vehicles have already arrived in Mumbai from Tesla’s (NASDAQ:TSLA) Shanghai factory. The vehicles were declared at 2.77M rupees ($32K) and attracted more than 2.1M rupees in import fees. This puts the vehicle at a base sticker price of more than $56K versus ~$40K for the same vehicle in the U.S., making it a tough sell in a country in which EVs account for just 5% of new vehicle sales, and less than 2% for luxury vehicles.
Nonetheless, the company is planning to expand throughout the country, with warehouses planned for Karnataka and Gurugram.
In March 2024, the Indian government introduced policies to increase the adoption of electric vehicles and attract global investment in its manufacturing sector. Under the new policy, up to 8,000 EVs can be imported annually by a foreign auto manufacturer at a reduced tariff rate, but only if the company commits $500M to establish local manufacturing facilities and component sourcing within the country.
Accordingly, Tesla (TSLA) has reportedly submitted a proposal for a $2B to $3B facility that can manufacture up to 500K vehicles per year.
