China orders local tech firms to stop buying Nvidia’s AI chips: report
The Cyberspace Administration of China has banned the nation's largest technology companies from buying Nvidia’s (NASDAQ:NVDA) AI chips, the Financial Times reported.
Several companies had indicated they would order tens of thousands of the RTX Pro 6000D, and had begun testing and verification work with Nvidia’s server suppliers, the report noted.
However, after the companies received the order from CAC, they told their suppliers to stop the work, according to the report.
The ban goes beyond earlier guidance from regulators which focused on Nvidia's other China-specific chip, H20. It comes after Chinese regulators decided that domestic chips had reached performance comparable to those of Nvidia’s products used in China, the report noted.
China is putting pressure on local tech companies to boost the country’s domestic semiconductor industry and break their dependence on Nvidia so it can compete in an AI race against the U.S.
Recently, China's regulators summoned local chipmakers such as Huawei Technologies and Cambricon, as well as Alibaba and Baidu, which also make their own chips, to report how their products compare against Nvidia’s China chips, the report added.
The regulators concluded that China’s AI processors have reached a level equal to or exceeding that of the Nvidia chips allowed under export controls, the report noted.
Nvidia unveiled the RTX Pro 6000D in July during CEO Jensen Huang’s visit to China, when the U.S. company also said Washington was easing its previous ban on the H20 chip.
The RTX Pro 6000D, which the company has said could be used in automated manufacturing, was the last product Nvidia was allowed to sell in China in significant volumes, the report noted.
On Monday, it was reported that Nvidia's RTX6000D for China had seen tepid demand, with some major Chinese tech companies opting not to place orders. Reportedly, testing of samples showed that the chip's performance was weaker than the RTX5090 — a chip banned by the U.S. for use in China but which is still available via grey market channels at less than half the RTX6000D's price of about 50,000 yuan ($7,000).
Nvidia regained permission to sell the H20 in July but shipments have yet to begin. Last week, Nvidia said it has received licenses for several of its key customers in China for the H20 chip but noted that there are some geopolitical situations it needs to work out between the U.S. and China.

Reddit and Google in talks for their next content agreement - report
Reddit (NYSE:RDDT) is in early discussions with Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL) for their next content-sharing agreement, according to a report by Bloomberg on Wednesday. The new agreement would allow deeper integration of Reddit's content into Google’s AI products.
The new partnership would encourage users to become active contributors to Reddit’s popular online forums, so Google traffic could help the company grow and generate content for future training, the report said, citing executives familiar with the discussions.
Reddit also plans to discuss with Google and OpenAI, which has a similar agreement, a future deal structure that could allow for dynamic pricing, where the social platform can be paid more as it becomes more vital to AI answers, the executives told Bloomberg.
Typically, AI companies pay a specific amount to showcase Reddit content within their AI products or to train their AI models. But Reddit believes these terms don’t adequately reflect how valuable their data has been to these platforms, the executives reportedly said.
Discussions between Reddit and Google have been productive, the report said.

Walt Disney (NYSE:DIS)’s ABC Network is taking late-night show Jimmy Kimmel Live! off air after the host received backlash for his remarks on his latest episode about the killing of Republican activist Charlie Kirk.

CRISPR Therapeutics wins new Overweight rating at J.P. Morgan on pipeline prospects
CRISPR Therapeutics (NASDAQ:CRSP) traded higher in the premarket on Thursday after J.P. Morgan initiated its coverage with an Overweight recommendation, noting how the company stands out in the gene editing space thanks to its pipeline potential.
The Swiss biotech, which markets Casgevy in-vivo gene editing therapy in partnership with Vertex Pharma (VRTX), deserves “a new look from investors as it gets closer to several inflection points across its portfolio,” analyst Brian Cheng wrote with a $70 target on the stock.
CRISPR’s (NASDAQ:CRSP) autoimmune CAR-T candidates, such as CTX112, allow it a faster path for market entry, the analyst added. Meanwhile, its in vivo techniques led by ANGPTL3 and Lp((a)) candidates have a compelling opportunity to chart the company’s next growth trajectory, given the pharma’s interest in this space, Cheng said.
“We believe CRSP has the right strategy and sufficient reserves to avoid falling into the same trap that we see in some of its gene-editing peers by balancing its portfolio with an autoimmune cell therapy and an in vivo cardiovascular play,” J.P. Morgan wrote.

AI czar David Sacks urges to update export controls as AI race heats up with China
"It’s time for Washington to update its assumptions with regard to export controls. American chip companies must be allowed to sell the American technology stack abroad, albeit with security requirements, else we forfeit the AI race to China. If we refuse to do business with a country, we push it into China’s arms," White House AI & Crypto Czar David Sacks said in a post on X.
Sacks noted that excessive bureaucratic delays are a "gift for Huawei," which will fill out purchase orders as American companies fill out forms.
"The hawkish position with respect to China is to help American companies win the AI race, not to help Huawei create a Digital Silk Road," said Sacks.
Sacks noted that the question of what the U.S. sells China will always be complicated, and there’s room for a range of opinions on that. "But the question of whether we sell to the rest of the world, especially our friends and allies, should be an easy one," Sacks noted.
