[News] U.S. slaps more tariffs on Southeast Asian solar imports
The Biden administration announced a new round of tariffs on solar panel imports from four Southeast Asian nations on Friday, according to initial findings of a Commerce Department review that unveiled duties of as much as 271%.
At issue are imports of crystalline silicon photovoltaic cells and modules made with them from Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam, countries which provide the bulk of U.S. solar cell and module imports.
The announcement comes nearly two months after the U.S. issued preliminary findings from a separate but related probe that the solar imports from Southeast Asia are unfairly benefiting from government aid.
After similar duties were imposed on solar imports from China more than a decade ago, Chinese manufacturers set up operations in other Asian nations that were not affected by the tariffs.
The U.S. investigations were triggered by an April petition from the American Alliance for Solar Manufacturing Trade Committee, which represents companies including First Solar (NASDAQ:FSLR) and Hanwha QCells.

Solar stocks rise as congressmen propose suspension of 45X manufacturing tax credit
Enphase Energy (NASDAQ:ENPH) finished +8.4% in Monday's trading, leading broad gains in most solar stocks, after two members of the U.S. House submitted a resolution to suspend the 45X advanced manufacturing production tax credit, and rewrite the legislation to prevent Chinese companies from receiving tax credits.
While legislation implemented under the Inflation Reduction Act, including the 45X tax credits, has contributed to a significant expansion of the U.S. renewable energy manufacturing sector, Michigan's John Moolenaar and Maine's Jared Golden said the tax credits currently allow for foreign companies, especially in China, to benefit from the tax breaks provided they build facilities on U.S. soil.
During a weekend webinar in which the Clean Energy Associates discussed the potential impacts of the election on the U.S. clean energy manufacturing sector, senior policy analyst Christian Roselund suggested that foreign companies would be able to benefit from the IRA tax incentives under the legislation in its current form, but that a crackdown could be coming, according to PV Tech.

ASP Isotopes completes construction, starts commissioning of Silicon-28 enrichment plant, Fuzzy Panda Drops Short Report
ASP Isotopes (NASDAQ:ASPI) +4.7% pre-market Tuesday after saying it has completed construction of a Silicon-28 enrichment facility in Pretoria, South Africa, and started the commissioning phase of the facility in preparation for supplying commercial quantities of Silicon-28 during H1 2025.
The company said it has signed two supply agreements with unnamed U.S.-based customers for highly enriched Silicon-28 from the plant, and is in discussions with "multiple other potential customers" for the supply of Silicon-28 and expects to sign more agreements during the next six months.
ASP Isotopes (ASPI) said the enrichment facility will be able to enrich more than 10 kg/year of Silicon-28, enriched to 99.995%; during construction, the company decided to expand the nameplate capacity and based on pre-commissioning data, it now believes the plant will be capable of enriching more than 50 kg/year of Silicon-28, enriched to 99.995%.
Silicon-28 is an isotope that is believed to enable quantum computing and likely will improve the performance of next generation semiconductors for artificial intelligence.
On Tuesday, shares of ASP Isotopes (ASPI) plummeted by 20% following a critical report from Fuzzy Panda Research. The report alleges that ASPI is utilizing outdated laser enrichment technology and is connected to individuals previously charged with securities fraud.
In a post on X Fuzzy Panda said “...ASPI has all the makings of the next nuclear meltdown. -Failed Tech from 20 years ago -Infamous “Microcap Fraudsters” Honig & Stetson involved -Paid Stock Promotion -Some South African Subsidiaries Suspiciously Missing”

Disney's 'Moana 2' bashing Thanksgiving records
Moana 2 impressed with $57.5M in domestic grosses on Wednesday, after a preview total of $13.8M, and added $28M on Thursday, marking the biggest Thanksgiving ever for a film. On Friday morning, Disney (DIS) said the film had taken in $109.6M on a global basis through Thursday.
It's tracking to some $175M-plus in domestic box office over the five-day holiday weekend -- with Disney staying on the conservative side, but rival studios expecting it could hit $200M.
That's easily on pace to become the biggest Thanksgiving film ever, surpassing the five-day total of 2019's Frozen II ($125M), and perhaps the best five-day opening ever.
Its predecessor Moana, released in 2016, landed at a total of $248.8M domestically and $643.3M on a worldwide basis. It opened to just over $82M in its five-day Thanksgiving release.

Electrovaya: Mispriced Potential For Industry-Leading Battery Technology
The Electrovaya battery excels in two areas: cycle life and safety profile.
Electrovaya has reported a 14,000 life cycle, the figure has been measured in the field and is not theoretical.
A second advantage of Electrovaya batteries is its safety record, with 28,000 infinity battery systems installed in material handling vehicles and 30,000 earlier versions installed in Daimler Smart cars, Electrovaya is yet to suffer a single safety issue.
The majority of Electrovaya's revenue comes from the materials handling market. Forklift trucks are heavy-duty machines working nearly 24 hours a day, and the quick charging long-life Electrovaya batteries have proven to be the best in this market. Toyota released a white paper showing the benefits of the technology (please see my earlier article for a full discussion) and signed an exclusive supply agreement, which they extended this year.
Electrovaya also sells its batteries directly to end users and through dealers for use in non-Toyota vehicles.
Sumitomo, one of the 5 large Japanese trading houses, signed an SOP (start of Production) agreement with Electrovaya to supply batteries for excavation machines this quarter. The contract follows a near 2-year testing and validation process.
Electrovaya is targeting 4 specific new verticals where it believes its product will have enough of an advantage for customers to pay a premium: construction and mining, locomotives and airport services, aerospace and defense, plus stationary storage/data centers.

Why I'm Doubling Down On D-Wave Quantum During This Pullback
D-Wave's quantum annealing systems are among the few quantum technologies that are currently being used in production environments by actual customers.
In the past year, the company had a total of 132 customers, compared to 125 in the previous year. Out of these, 76 were commercial customers, including 27 Forbes Global 2000 companies.
Most of these customers pay a subscription to the Leap quantum cloud service to run quantum computations without needing to own the physical hardware.
The Leap subscription is priced at $70k per year in the AWS marketplace.
