[News] MP Materials launches U.S. production of rare earth magnets
MP Materials (NYSE:MP) +4% pre-market Wednesday after saying it has launched domestic production of a rare earth magnet it intends to mass produce for General Motors and other U.S. customers.

Amazon suspends drone deliveries after two training crashes: report
Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN) has suspended commercial drone deliveries after two of its newest models crashed at a training facility during rainy weather, Bloomberg reported late Friday.
Bloomberg reported that Amazon said it was immediately pausing drone deliveries in Arizona and Texas to address issues with the aircrafts’ software.
In a previously unreported incident last month, two MK30 drones crashed at the airport Amazon uses for testing in Pendleton, Oregon, Bloomberg said, adding one caught fire on the ground.
The report said Amazon blamed the crashes on a software issue that was connected to light rain the drones were flying in.

Netflix GAAP EPS of $4.27 beats by $0.07, revenue of $10.25B beats by $140M
The streaming pioneer added a record 18.91M net subscribers for the quarter -- 44% year-over-year growth, and more than doubling an expected gain of 9.18M.
It also touted new sign-ups due to recent key content moves, including a new season of its hit Squid Game and the arrival of big live sporting events, including the Mike Tyson/Jake Paul boxing match, WWE Raw and Christmas Day NFL games.
Netflix said this was the last time that it would report quarterly subscriber numbers as it focuses on sales and profits.
As the company continues to de-emphasize quarterly memberships and revenue forecasts, margins come increasingly into focus -- and its fourth-quarter operating margin came in at 22.2%, up sharply from a year-ago 16.9% (but still the lowest margin of 2024's four quarters; its Q3 margin was 29.6%).
Netflix forecast first-quarter operating margin of 28.2%, slightly higher than the 28.1% it logged in Q1 2024.
The company's increasingly important ad-supported service tier made up 55% of sign-ups in countries where it was available during the fourth quarter, and membership on the ads plan overall rose 30% from the prior quarter.

Nuclear stocks rally as South Carolina utility to reboot huge project to meet AI demand
Nuclear-related stocks finished mostly higher Wednesday after South Carolina power provider Santee Cooper said it is seeking proposals for buyers to restart construction of a pair of reactors at its V.C. Summer Nuclear Station.
The state-owned utility is betting interest will be strong, with tech giants such as Amazon and Microsoft in need of clean energy to fuel data centers for artificial intelligence capabilities, The Wall Street Journal reported.
Santee Cooper likely will look to tap a consortium that could include a construction firm, a tech company that will use the power and an additional partner for capital, according to the WSJ report.
Construction of two nuclear reactors at the V.C. Summer plant was halted in 2017 after Santee Cooper and the plant's then-co-owner, South Carolina Electric & Gas, already had spent ~$9B; Santee Cooper now owns 100% of the assets at the plant.
The company expects to recover some of the $9B that was previously spent, the report said, but completion of the reactors would still cost billions of dollars more over several years.

[Newsletter Exclusive] Himax Technologies emerging as 'key' AI winner from Taiwan Semi: analyst
"Thanks to COUPE [Taiwan Semiconductor's silicon photonics initiative], Himax is poised for robust expansion over the next few years," TF International Securities' analyst Ming-Chi Kuo wrote in a post. "I estimate Himax revenue to reach approximately $1.16B, $1.42B, and $2.4B in 2026–2028, respectively (vs. the consensus of $1.11B for 2026), and EPS around $1.00, $1.60, and $3.40 (vs. the consensus of $0.80 for 2026)."
The first-generation of COUPE is already fully developed, and it is receiving the "highest priority" amongst Taiwan Semiconductor's developing technologies, Kuo explained. Mass production validation is already underway and second-gen mass production validation is expected to start in the first-half of 2026, Himax is poised to benefit, as it is the exclusive micro-lens array supplier for both generations, Kuo added.
And while comments from both Taiwan Semiconductor and Nvidia (NVDA) regarding silicon photonics timeline may appear contradictory — TSM believes silicon photonics mass production could come in about 1–1.5 years, while Nvidia thinks it may take several years — Nvidia's Rubin line of GPUs could use COUPE if mass production is on time, Kuo added.
Separately, AMD (AMD) is likely to be the first Taiwan Semiconductor client to adopt COUPE, continuing its "aggressive trend of using TSMC's advanced technologies," Kuo added.

[Newsletter Exclusive] SEC repeals SAB 121 accounting rule for crypto financial reporting
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has repealed Staff Accounting Bulletin ("SAB") No. 121, which required banks and other publicly-traded companies to account for customers' crypto assets on their balance sheets, deterring them from custody services.
Instead, the SEC's latest SAB 122 bulletin, announced on Jan. 23 in a notice, instructs firms to adhere to Financial Accounting Standards Board rules or International Accounting Standard provisions.
The controversial SAB 121 rule, which former SEC Chair Gary Gensler backed, led to increased capital reserve obligations as it required lenders to recognize client-held crypto on their balance sheets. While SAB 121 intended to safeguard investors, it ended up restricting their access to crypto through traditional banks.
The rescission is expected to "serve as a significant catalyst for institutional adoption," Bernchmark analyst Mark Palmer wrote in a note.

Rivian takes its first steps toward autonomous driving with a hands-free driving feature
Rivian Automotive (NASDAQ:RIVN) CEO RJ Scaringe announced this week that the company will introduce a hands-free driver assistance system later this year.
The system is classified as a Level 2 autonomous driving feature, allowing drivers to remove their hands from the steering wheel while still requiring them to monitor the road. The technology will be similar to existing systems like Ford's (F) BlueCruise and General Motor's Super Cruise.
The hands-free system is part of Rivian's broader autonomous driving strategy, which includes their current Rivian Autonomy Platform. This platform already features 11 cameras, five radar sensors, 12 ultrasonic sensors, and a driver-facing camera. The new hands-free capability will be followed by a more advanced "eyes-off" Level 3 system that is planned for 2026.
While the announcement is significant, it is unclear what the compatibility of the system will be with existing vehicles. The feature may be limited to Gen 2 Rivian vehicles (2025 and newer), which come equipped with the enhanced Rivian Autonomy Platform.
